PreMedical Internship

Our premedical internship gives you the opportunity to join our team of healthcare professionals who are helping patients in a holistic approach. The internship gives you the opportunity to get hands-on medical experience and learn about wellness care, diseases, injuries, and mental health conditions. It is ideal for anyone who plans to go to medical, physican assistant or nursing school in a few years.

Our premedical internship trains future health professionals in patient interviewing, physical diagnosis, venipuncture, laboratory, and radiology skills (and includes the skills listed in the job description above for medical assistants). Some of these are skills might normally be taught to third-year medical students, if at all. The premedical internship is also an opportunity to learn about anatomy, medications and medical tests.

No prior medical experience is required, although previous health care experience is always helpful. This is an unpaid internship with the possibility of paid employment should a position become available during your time with us. We frequently hire premedical interns as full or part-time medical assistants when they have acquired most of the clinical skills needed. If hired as a medical assistant, a minimum one year commitment, from the start of employment, is required.

The days and hours of the internship are flexible based on your availability and our staffing schedule. However, we do request a commitment of at least 10 hours per week over a minimum nine-month period. Internship shifts must be at least 3 hours long (so you have the opportunity to see and do more) with at least part of these hours occuring during the weekday. Evening and weekend hours are best only after the intern has first learned many of our basic skills. Your internship schedule should be the same every week although changes in schedule may be made with each new semester if you are currently in school.

Premedical interns are expected to commit to the internship as if it were a regular job. You will be expected to follow the policies and procedures of our office. Also, you will be expected to arrive on time, be at The Family Doctor during your scheduled internship hours, and use your time well when you are in the office. Sometimes you may be given homework, such as to study a particular disease of a patient seen in the clinic that day, or to read about tests or procedures.

Interns should dress in neat scrubs with pockets (any color or pattern) and white shoes (no flashy athletic shoes please). Long hair should be tied back. You will need to have a watch with a second hand (for pulses and respiratory rates) and a stethoscope (for blood pressures and to hear heart and lung sounds). If you have any Spanish speaking skills, a pocket medical Spanish dictionary or medical Spanish phrase book will be helpful.

In order to comply with OSHA and CLIA regulations, applicants who are accepted into the Premedical internship will need to bring in documentation of your Hepatitis B series (and a titer level if this has been checked), documentation of your MMR series (or evidence of having the measles), documentation of your last TB test (PPD) if this was done in the previous eight months, and a copy of your diploma from the highest level of education you have completed. If you have never had either the Hepatitis B vaccine series or the PPD test, you will be required to obtain these at your own expense.

Premedical internships may begin at any time of the year depending upon our availability. In the event that we do not have an opening when you apply, we will hold your application until there is one. However, due to the high volume of applications that we receive, we are unable to respond to every applicant. To insure that your application has been received, you may want to enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard which we will return to you.

If you are interested in becoming a premedical intern, please send us three items. 1) Your resume. 2) A cover letter detailing your interests and including specific information about the days and hours of your availability. 3) Please also send us our Nursing Skills Inventory (which can be downloaded HERE). Although we do not expect our premedical interns to have any nursing skills, if you do have some skills, we would like to know about them.

Please no phone calls and no e-mail questions. We simply do not have time to answer.
