Job Description: |
Full-time weekday or part-time evenings and weekends. Our in-house lab is CLIA accredited. We have a Cell-Dyne 1800 for complete blood counts; a DCA 2000 for the HbA1c test; and a Clinitek for urinalysis. We use kits for influenza, strep, mono, and pregnancy. Other labs are sent out to Lab Corp. Pap smears are usually sent to Duke, and pathologies are sent to Greensboro Pathology. We use Mysis (Medic) for patient demographics and appointment scheduling. Weekday shifts (32 to 40 hours per week) usually start at 7:45am, 8:00am, 8:15am or 8:30am and end at 4:45pm, 5:00pm, 5:15pm or 5:30pm with one hour for lunch. Weekday shifts cover both walk-in urgent care and scheduled appointments. Depending upon our current needs, we also may have available a part-time weekday morning shift ending at 12 noon or 1pm or a combination day/evening shift (Monday through Friday) beginning at 1or 2pm until evening closing. Evening shifts usually start anytime between 4pm and 5:30pm and end at closing time or when the last patient for the evening has been taken care of. Saturday shifts start at 7:45am and end at 6pm or when the last patient has been seen. Sunday shifts start at 12:30pm and end at 5pm or when the last patient has been taken care of. Evening and weekend shifts handle walk-in, urgent care only. Depending upon our current needs, we may also have a combination of weekday (day or evening) and weekend. The Family Doctor is a fast-paced medical office, so the ability to multi-task and work closely with others is a must. On the weekdays, one nursing staff (MA, LPN or RN) works with each of our health care providers. On evenings and weekends, we are staffed with two nursing supports working with one health care provider. Evening staff is responsible for closing down the lab and x-ray. Weekend staff is responsible for opening and closing down both the lab and the x-ray. Weekday (daytime) nursing staff are expected to accept call approximately one week each month (the actual frequency is based upon the number of full-time nursing staff currently working). To be on call requires that you are available to work beyond your normally scheduled hours. During your call week, you will be given a pager. You must be able to work on short notice should an evening or weekend nursing staff person become sick or for any other reason that the clinic may be short staffed. Dress code for nursing staff is neat scrubs with pockets (any color or pattern) and white shoes (no flashy athletic shoes please). Long hair should be tied back. Make-up should be kept to a minimum and perfumes are not permitted due to the sensitivity of some patients. You will need a watch with a second hand and your own stethoscope. In order to comply with OSHA and CLIA regulations, all new clinical staff will need to bring in documentation of Hepatitis B series (and a titer level if this has been checked), documentation of your MMR series (or evidence of having the measles), documentation of your last TB test (PPD) if this was done in the previous eight months, and a copy of your diploma from the highest level of education you have completed. Experience is required for all nursing positions, preferably in a primary care setting (family practice, internal medicine, urgent care, or pediatrics). We will train you in the skills that you are lacking. Ability to speak Spanish is helpful. If interested in applying for a position, please send us: 1) A cover letter detailing your hours and days of availability, and the date when you will be able to begin work; 2) your resume; and 3) a completed Nursing Skills Inventory. Job Description: |
Our premedical internship gives you the opportunity to join our team of healthcare professionals who are helping patients in a holistic approach. The internship gives you the opportunity to get hands-on medical experience and learn about wellness care, diseases, injuries, and mental health conditions. It is ideal for anyone who plans to go to medical, physican assistant or nursing school in a few years. Our premedical internship trains future health professionals in patient interviewing, physical diagnosis, venipuncture, laboratory, and radiology skills (and includes the skills listed in the job description above for medical assistants). Some of these are skills might normally be taught to third-year medical students, if at all. The premedical internship is also an opportunity to learn about anatomy, medications and medical tests. No prior medical experience is required, although previous health care experience is always helpful. This is an unpaid internship with the possibility of paid employment should a position become available during your time with us. We frequently hire premedical interns as full or part-time medical assistants when they have acquired most of the clinical skills needed. If hired as a medical assistant, a minimum one year commitment, from the start of employment, is required. The days and hours of the internship are flexible based on your availability and our staffing schedule. However, we do request a commitment of at least 10 hours per week over a minimum nine-month period. Internship shifts must be at least 3 hours long (so you have the opportunity to see and do more) with at least part of these hours occuring during the weekday. Evening and weekend hours are best only after the intern has first learned many of our basic skills. Your internship schedule should be the same every week although changes in schedule may be made with each new semester if you are currently in school. Premedical interns are expected to commit to the internship as if it were a regular job. You will be expected to follow the policies and procedures of our office. Also, you will be expected to arrive on time, be at The Family Doctor during your scheduled internship hours, and use your time well when you are in the office. Sometimes you may be given homework, such as to study a particular disease of a patient seen in the clinic that day, or to read about tests or procedures. Interns should dress in neat scrubs with pockets (any color or pattern) and white shoes (no flashy athletic shoes please). Long hair should be tied back. You will need to have a watch with a second hand (for pulses and respiratory rates) and a stethoscope (for blood pressures and to hear heart and lung sounds). If you have any Spanish speaking skills, a pocket medical Spanish dictionary or medical Spanish phrase book will be helpful. In order to comply with OSHA and CLIA regulations, applicants who are accepted into the Premedical internship will need to bring in documentation of your Hepatitis B series (and a titer level if this has been checked), documentation of your MMR series (or evidence of having the measles), documentation of your last TB test (PPD) if this was done in the previous eight months, and a copy of your diploma from the highest level of education you have completed. If you have never had either the Hepatitis B vaccine series or the PPD test, you will be required to obtain these at your own expense. Premedical internships may begin at any time of the year depending upon availability. If you are interested in becoming a premedical intern, please send us your resume and a cover letter detailing your interests. Please include specific information about the days and hours of your availability. Although we do not expect our premedical interns to have any nursing skills, we like to know about any clinical skills that you do have. So please also send us the Nursing Skills Inventory (which can be downloaded from above, under the job description for Medical Assistant, LPN and RN). No phone calls please. |
